Lectures for children of Third Country Nationals on Latvian language and culture

Also in the framework of the project IOM organized lectures of Latvian language and culture with migrants' children. Lectures were held once a week for up to an hour and a half, depending on the age of the children. Participants were separated into 3 groups, as children from the ages of 4 to 12 took part in the project. Lectures were based on the positive perception of the language and constructive interaction with others to expand the participants' horizons. All cultural events included children's parents, who were just as happy to attend as their children.

The goal of the courses was to harmonically teach the mother and her child with a new language environment, to evoke the interest in learning Latvian, to form the skills of collective learning, the ability to develop the thinking process and to expand the horizons.

Not only mothers participated in the courses, but also grandmothers with their grandchildren.

»At the lectures they showed us how we can learn Latvian together with our children and they gave us ideas and the necessery materials. Afterwards we were charged with positive energy for the rest of our everyday tasks,« said Lala, grandmother of Sofia from Georgia.

Mother of Taisa from Ukraine noted that because the lectures took place together with their children, they were able to enter the world of Latvian language through a happy and playful form. In this way the mothers as well can build their knowledge as their children are immersed in a specific language environment. Mothers, who attened the courses, were involved in the lecture and helped their children to learn with us! This is both fun and educational.

»This form of lectures makes the parents and the children like-minded, it enables greater closeness between a mother and a child, gives the possibility for positive communication within a group and provides satisfaction from collective progress. Attendance and active participation at lectures does not only enable the parents to be aware of the study material, but also to rejoice in the successes of the child together with him,« said the professors of the Latvian language.
