Excursions to the museums

International organization for migration (IOM), in the framework of the project »Safety and tolerance – conditions for successful integration of immigrants in Latvia«, organized several excursions to the museums.

On the 7th of May 2014 the participants visited the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation. In the beginning the representative of the museum gave a lecture on the history of culture and she introduced the attendants with cultural and historical traditions of Latvia. Then all the participants were invited for a tour around the museum. At this event historical traditions of Latvia were graphically portrayed.

The goal of this event was to establish cultural dialogue, since the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation is not only one of the oldest public museums in Latvia and in the Baltics, but one of the oldest in Europe as well. Museum is located in Vecriga (Old Riga) in the building of Riga Catherdal, which is an outstanding architectural monument of XIII-XX centuries.

Participants were mostly interested in the rich and diverse fonds of natural-scientific, artistic and historical artifacts. They noted that their knowledge of history was supplemented by facts on Society for the learning of history and antiquity of the Baltic provinces of Russia and on Riga's society of natural scientists.

One of the students said: »These events are a new experience of learning about Riga, a city created and developed by different nations throughout its history. This shows Riga and Latvia from a more multifaceted perspective. Thank you very much for such an exciting adventure.«

On the 19th of April we organized a festive event in expectation of Easter – we went to The Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia, which is one of the oldest and biggest open-air museums in Europe. About 50 students participated in the excursion.

Students learned about the life and landscapes of all the regions of Latvia in miniatures, a journey that was completed in 2 hours. Picturesque nature, interesting scenes from everyday life and architectural monuments of Latvian regions did not leave our participants cold. The group could see how did the ancient Latvian farmers and fishermen live and in what kind of baths did the ancient Latvians bathe. The mini-journey through Latvia finished with a group meal, songs and folk games.

»This unusual knowledge of Latvia will help me and my family to better understand the country and to feel myself a small, yet an important part of it.« - concluded Oksana from Kostroma.

Visiting theatres

In the framework of the project »Safety and tolerance - conditions for successful integration of immigrants in Latvia« are included also social and cultural events such as visits to theatres.
Students have visited Latvian National opera (Latvijas Nacionala opera), Latvian National Theatre (Latvijas Nacionalais teatris) and Russian theatre of Mihail Chekhov in Riga. Visiting theatres gives the opportunity to the students to see famous plays and learn the 'high Latvian' with its most useful phrases. The goal of this action was to enable harmonious introduction into the cultural sphere of Latvia and the treasures of the world art.
Students said that visits to theatre are a real holiday for them, where they can distract themselves from the everyday problems and acquire new knowledge.

Hobby club

Also in the framework of the project »Safety and tolerance - conditions for successful integration of immigrants in Latvia« we organized »Hobby club«. In the club there was a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and free interactions. Participants had the opportunity to find out more about certain topics, to acquire valuable skills, share their experience, assist and help the others and find like-minded people and friends.
The hobby club gave them the opportunity to merge their learning of Latvian with the actual activity, gain greater confidence, be self-asserted, acquire experience and respect for other cultures. Many women gladly presented their national cuisine, creative interests and their knowledge on beauty and preservation of youthfulness. And this is the real value of the hobby club.

Lectures on tolerance

The project »Safety and tolerance - conditions for successful integration of immigrants in Latvia« also consisted of lecture on tolerance in 8 grammar schools in Riga. Lectures were of great interest both to the pupils as well as to the teachers. At lectures pupils became acquainted with the concept of tolerance, they defined the relationship between the ability to tolerate and the quality of interpersonal relationships and they formed their own personal concept of tolerance. In this manner teachers noted an increase of benevolence, tolerance, respect and understanding in class after the lectures.

After the lectures we organized a contest "What is tolerance for me?". Children with best pictrues received awards.

The project will continue untill 30 June 2014.

The project is co-financed by the European Union. The project is implemented with the financial support of the European Fund for the Integration of Third-Country Nationals (75%) and the State budget (25%). This publication is supported by the European Fund for the Integration of Third-Country Nationals.
